Although born to a slave woman owned by Moses Carver, George Washington Carver was actually raised by the Carvers as their own son. Beginning his education in a one-room school house, George entered Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, in 1887. From there he transfered to what is now Iowa State University where he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Agriculture. While serving as Agricultural Director at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, he developed his crop rotation method which revolutionized farming in the South. As both educator and scientist, George Carver worked to improve the lives of Black Americans.

Mary McLeod Bethune was born to former slaves a decade after the Civil War. She was a teacher and an activist who devoted her life to ensure that African Americans had the right to an education and to be free from discrimination. She worked with presidents Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin Roosevelt on child welfare, housing, employment and education. She also served on President Truman's Committee of Twelve for National Defense. Mary McLeod Bethune died on May 18, 1955 leaving a legacy of interracial cooperation and increased educational opportunity for African Americans.
